Rotorua

Rotorua has without a doubt one of the most awe-inspiring landscapes in the world. It is a geothermal wonderland, teaming with hot water springs, geysers, boiling mud pools, and many other volcanic phenomenons. Added to this is the constant sulphuric aroma in the air and the unpredictable hiss and roar of steam escaping from underneath the streets!

Pohutu Geyser

We begin with a visit to Whakarewarewa Thermal Village, the ideal place to see some of these thermal wonders up close. We see numerous boiling pools, strange sulphur formations, and of course the famous Pohutu Geyser. We learn about the Maori lifestyle, history and customs. We hear about traditional wood-carving techniques and enjoy a traditional Maori concert, which includes a demonstration of the well known Haka war-dance. Our visit ends with lunch, a "hangi" feast which consists of chicken, potatoes and corn cobs. All of the food has been cooked either in the boiling pools or utilising steam in an earth oven!

Kaituna Rafting

Later, we go white water rafting on the Kaituna River. This is a totally awesome experience, which involves navigating several river rapids and descending a seven metre high waterfall! Then it's off to Mount Ngongotaha for a scenic ascent up the mountain in a gondala, followed by a hair-raising descent in a luge. After all that exertion we end the day with a visit to the Polynesian Spas.
