Christchurch - Fox Glacier

Leaving Chrishtchurch, we make our way across the Canterbury Plains until we come to the Southern Alps. Here we take what is known as Arthur's Pass through the mountains and across to a small town called Hokitika.

Jade (also known as greenstone) is plentiful on the west coast, and in Hokitika we stop to visit a jade factory. We then continue along the coast and into Westland National Park.

Shortly before arriving in Fox we make a detour to Lake Matheson where our driver promises us some great views of the mountains reflected in the lake. Unfortunately the usually calm and clear lake is today full of ripples, so their is no reflection to see. The walk is enjoyable though, and we do spot this unusual blue toadstool along the path!
